From Friday, Dec. 13 to Sunday, Dec. 15, students from 50 high schools gathered together at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California for the 2019 La Costa Canyon Winter Classic.
Hosted annually during mid-December, the La Costa Canyon Winter Classic attracts hundreds of students interested in speech and debate. While the majority of competitors are from California, several out-of-state schools were also in attendance. This was partially a result of the tournament’s status as a bid tournament, or one that offers the opportunity to qualify for both the annual Tournament of Champions as well as the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions, both of which are among the most highly regarded and prestigious speech and debate tournaments.
The La Costa Canyon tournament offered a handful of speech and debate events. The debate events included Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Public Forum Debate. Additionally, eleven speech events were provided, the most popular being Impromptu Speaking, followed by Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory and Dramatic Interpretation; those four events combined accounted for nearly 250 of the 634 entries.
By the time Sunday night rolled around, all of the event finals had finished and the results were finally released online. The months’ work of preparation, hard work, and diligence had finally paid off in a weekend full of anticipation, stress but also fun.
Congratulations to all of the competitors!
