From its founding in 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program has recognized the vision, talent and curiosity of teens across the nation. While the program has accumulated a lengthy list of alumni, including Stephen King, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates and Andy Warhol, it also places a special emphasis on nurturing the nation’s youth through creativity and expression.
Each year, the program partners with some 100 visual and literary arts organizations across the country to bring the Scholastic Awards program to local communities. Beginning in September, students in grades 7-12 from all across the country begin submitting original works of art and literature in 29 categories; art categories include digital art, painting and photography while the most popular writing categories are poetry, personal essay & memoir and short story.
Although the application deadline varies among different regions, the vast majority of deadlines are during early December. All entries are then judged by adjudicators on their demonstration of originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. One to two months later, each region releases its list of award winners. There are four types of regional awards: Gold Key, Silver Key, Honorable Mention and the American Voices & Visions Nominees. Only the works that receive a Gold Key award will move on to the national level; additionally, five Gold Key-earning pieces from each region are also be nominated for the American Voices & Visions Medals, one of the highest awards offered by the program.
This year, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program received over 300,000 entries, and just recently, each region released its list of award recipients. The West Region-at-Large region, which encompasses most southern California school districts, released over one hundred pages of award recipients just this week. Some received Honorable Mentions, others received Silver Keys, and yet others clinched Gold Keys.
Congratulations to all of the 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards West Region-at-Large winners!
